Cusco is located at over 3,300 meters (10,800 ft) above sea level, so it’s common for some travelers to experience altitude sickness when they arrive. The good news is that with proper preparation and a few simple precautions, you can minimize its effects and enjoy your trip comfortably.

1. Take it easy on your first day

When you arrive in Cusco, avoid strenuous activities. Rest, walk slowly, and give your body time to adapt to the altitude during the first 24 hours.

2. Stay well hydrated

Drinking plenty of water helps your body adjust to lower oxygen levels. Avoid alcohol and very sugary drinks during your first days.

3. Eat light meals

Choose light, easy-to-digest foods. Heavy meals can increase discomfort. Soups and mild local dishes are often a good choice.

4. Try coca tea

Coca tea is a traditional drink in Cusco and other Andean regions. Many travelers use it to help relieve altitude sickness symptoms, always in moderation.

5. Get enough rest and avoid stress

Good sleep helps your body recover and adapt more quickly. Resting well during the first nights is essential.

6. Listen to your body

If you feel dizziness, headaches, or nausea, slow down and rest. Pushing yourself too hard can worsen symptoms.

7. Consult a professional if needed

If you have pre-existing medical conditions or plan demanding activities like high-altitude treks, it’s advisable to consult a doctor before your trip.

Altitude sickness in Cusco is common, but it doesn’t have to ruin your experience. With proper acclimatization, healthy habits, and a relaxed pace, you can fully enjoy the city, its history, and its landscapes. Good preparation is the key to a safe and memorable trip.
